FIONA STRANGE BSc BVetMed MRCVS - PARTNER

I’ve worked in Nine Mile Veterinary group since 2000 and became a partner in 2003. I spend most of my time running Burghfield Vets but also enjoy working at Goring Vets. For as long as I remember, I’ve been animal mad. Where this passion sprung from, I’m really not sure. I was brought up in suburbia with parents, who liked a clean, orderly and hair-free environment. Once they agreed to the tank of tropical fish for my 6th birthday it was a slippery slope that consisted of 2 tortoises, 1 terrapin, 3 hamsters, 2 rabbits, 3 cats, 2 ponies and 2 dogs…My creature family today consists of Sproket, a hyperactive Springer Spaniel that I rescued and a dear cat called Jamaal (also a stray that walked through the surgery doors).  When I’m not vetting I used to have hobbies like watersports and riding but now most of the time is spent with my lovely family; hubbie and daughter Mya.  I enjoy meeting people and their pets and am currently studying for my Ophthalmology certificate.  See my blog for more at www.fullyvetted.com

CAROLINE GOULTON BVetMed(Hons) GPCert(SAM) MRCVS - VETERINARY SURGEON

I graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1998. Although I initially started in mixed practice, I have worked with 100% small animals since 2001. I really enjoy my job with the variety it brings and the contact with the animals and their owners - I find building relationships with clients and their much loved pets very rewarding.

I started work in Burghfield in February 2008 and love working here - it's nice to work somewhere that still has that "personal touch" and we have a really good team who work well together. I have a particular interest in medicine cases having passed my General Practitioner certificate in this subject in 2006.

When I am not at work I am usually walking my dog, Sherlock. My boyfriend and I rescued Sherlock while on holiday in Corsica. We found him on the beach, very miserable and alone. With the lack of rescue facilities in Corsica, and after much agonising, we decided to bring him home. He is a fantastic dog and he has just passed his Kennel Club Good Citizen Bronze award - we are very proud of him!

My other hobby is photography, though I have less time for it these days. I have just purchased a wide angle lens to have a go at some proper landscape photography - probably whilst walking Sherlock!

HELEN MATTHEWS MA VetMB MRCVS - VETERINARY SURGEON

I grew up in the Reading area and decided to return here after graduating from Cambridge Vet School in 2009. I have always loved animals and it has been my ambition to be a vet for as long as I can remember. I am currently working at both Burghfield and Goring surgeries and thoroughly enjoy my job, particularly meeting such a variety of people and pets.

Outside of work I enjoy a number of sports, both to watch (football and formula one) and to participate in (running and swimming). I enjoying skiing and socialising with family and friends. I have recently moved house, specifically so I could get a dog!

NICCI MEADOWS BVetMed MRCVS - VETERINARY SURGEON

I grew up with a rather disobedient, shaggy and loveable Irish Setter called JoJo, and a string of hamsters, a couple of mice called Milly and Molly (not my mum's favorite addition to the clan) and latterly (after the mice had gone) two cats, Annie and Tarzan. At the moment, I am animal-less, owing to the large amount of time I spend travelling from one end of the country to the other to indulge my other passion; racing my bike. However, I have remedied this by finding a lovely cottage to live in on a farm, complete with cows, pigs, two enormous Leonberger dogs and numerous cats, one of which thinks he owns my house and strolls in uninvited whenever he feels like it!

I qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2006 and worked in Henley on Thames for the first four years of my career before starting at Burghfield Vets in September 2010. I work both at Goring and Burghfield and love every minute of it! I am especially interested in surgery, both soft tissue and orthopaedics.

When I am not working, as I have already mentioned, much of my time is spent on my bike. I race most of the weekend throughout the summer, on both the road and track, although track is definately what I prefer. My main focus this year is the National Track Championships in September.

SUSAN NARRAWAY RVN - HEAD  NURSE
I started working at Burghfield vets in 2003 and became a qualified veterinary nurse in 2005. Before joining the team I studied at BCA doing a National Diploma in animal care and then moved on to do a Higher National Diploma in animal science at Hartpury College. I also worked at DEFRA dealing with the export of pets, before the pet passport came about. I have a long haired cat called Gabbie and a 3 legged cat called Taz, both of them I rescued from the surgery as strays.

SAM READ RVN - PRACTICE MANAGER

I began my career at Burghfield in June 2003 and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2006. Since undertaking a YTS (remember them?) in Small Animal Care a number of years ago, I have always had a keen interest in rescue and rehoming and have volunteered and/or worked for a variety of animal charities in the past. Due to the ageing of my own furry family, I am particularly interested in our senior pets as well as continuing my interest in rescue work. The latest addition to the family is William, a 17 year old cat, making our current family 1 dog, 5 cats, 2 rabbits and 2 guinea pigs. Needless to say they are all rescues!

More recently, I have hung up my 'greens' to take on the role of Practice Manager, which is something that brings a whole new set of challenges. But I still get the best bits of fussing our patients! Outside of work, I am a bit of a 'petrol head' and own a variety of motorcycles and a 1976 VW campervan, which we have spent years restoring! I am also busy with home improvements following a house move last year.

KATIE ROGERS RVN - VETERINARY NURSE

I started at Burghfield with work experience in April 2006, which led to a Saturday job in the October.  After finishing my A levels I was given the opportunity to work at the practice full time as a trainee, and I have since qualified in January 2011. I have a keen interest in surgical nursing and hope to gain my diploma in the near future.

I have many animals of my own at home including a stray cat (Annie) that I couldn't bear to leave in the practice over Christmas, so I took her home! My other pets include my two dogs (Abbie and Reesie), my other cat (Jeff), one eyed wild rabbit (Peggy), parrot (Buddy), lizard (Croc) and my many ducks and bantams which I hatched and raised myself!

I started here in October 2008 and moved to Burghfield in the December. I have an old pony back at home called Eddie and have adopted a stray cat (pictured). Freya can often be seen watching the cars while sitting in the window above the practice. I have even persuaded my parents to take one of our stray cats (Harley) home!

I'm in my second year at college and am looking forward to becoming qualified. When I'm not doing college work I enjoy running, reading and gaming. I'm also planning my wedding for next May.

In July 2009 I went on maternity leave and since returning to work I now do two days a week and enjoy my role in nurse training. My special interests include diabetic patients, having experienced this with my own dog, and medical nursing. ALISON CARTER - STUDENT VETERINARY NURSE

I started at Burghfield in December 2010, and I really enjoy working here. I am looking forward to starting college in September so that I can start my training to become a qualified veterinary nurse. I have always loved animals and have had lots of different pets in the past including 3 troublesome spaniels, guinea pigs, gerbils and hamsters. At the moment I have 2 very naughty chinchillas called Hugo and Alfie and an equally disobedient rabbit called Zeus.

In my free time, I like to catch up with my friends. I also enjoy reading, walking and going home to the Isle of Wight for a swim in the sea!
